Department of Geographical Sciences Presents at the American Association of Geographers Annual Meeting

Fjallsárlón, SE Iceland - May 2018

The University of Maryland Department of Geographical Sciences had a strong presence at the American Association of Geographers Annual Meeting, held virtually from April 7 to April 11, 2021. There was a strong showing from the University of Maryland Department of Geographical Science’s Center for Geospatial Information Science.

Presentations included (in scheduled session order):

  • Guimin Zhu, Ph.D. student, Center for Geospatial Information Science, presented the paper titled, “Geospatial analysis of human mobility during the COVID-19 pandemic spread in Florida.”
  • Zhiyue (Luna) Xia, Ph.D. candidate, Center for Geospatial Information Science, presented the paper titled “Learning spatiotemporal patterns of drug-related crimes in a major metropolitan area using a random forest model.”
  • Jeff Sauer, Ph.D. candidate, presented the paper titled, “A spatio-temporal Bayesian model to estimate spatial patterns of risk for drug-involved emergency department visits in the greater Baltimore-Maryland region.”
  • Yao Li, Ph.D. student, presented the paper titled, “Understanding the population risk from malaria using human mobility.”
  • Dr. Ariane de Bremond, Senior Research Scientist Centre for Development and Environment (CDE), University of Bern and Dr. Evan Ellicott, Associate Research Professor were co-authors on a presentation titled, “Two of a kind? Large-scale land acquisitions and commodity frontier expansion in Argentina’s Dry Chaco.”
  • Dr. Amanda Hoffman-Hall, Director of Undergraduate Studies, presented the paper titled, “Is Geography for Gen Z? Perceptions of Geography Key Words by University of Maryland Undergraduates.

Additionally, Dr. Kathleen Stewart, Professor and Director of the Center for Geospatial Information Science, served as a panelist on the panel titled, “Spatiotemporal analytics on COVID-19.”
